Ryūfuku-ji, Buddhist temple in Asahi, Japan
Ryūfuku-ji is a Buddhist temple in Asahi with several buildings spread across its grounds, including a Niōmon gate, a Hondō main hall, a Dainichiden chapel, a Kannon-dō chapel, and a Daishi-dō chapel. These structures are arranged to create a cohesive sanctuary complex dedicated to Buddhist worship.
The temple was founded in 788 by the Buddhist priest Kūkai and was completely destroyed by fire during Sengoku period conflicts near Mibiro Castle. This fire marked a major turning point in the temple's long history.
This temple belongs to the Shingon Chizan Sect and houses a Fudō-myōō statue that draws followers and fishermen from the nearby Kujukuri Coast.
The temple is located about 4 kilometers north of Iioka Station on the JR East Sobu Main Line and can be reached by regular bus service. The grounds are walkable and offer clear paths connecting the various chapels and buildings.
The temple complex is surrounded by several waterfalls and offers a special sight from late May through June when Genji fireflies appear near the Hondō main hall. This seasonal natural display draws visitors who come to observe the glowing insects.
