Iioka Lighthouse, Brick lighthouse in Asahi, Japan

Iioka Lighthouse is a cylindrical structure with white exterior walls that stands on the Byobugaura cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The tower rises from a dramatic coastal setting and serves as a navigation marker for vessels passing along this stretch of the eastern shoreline.

The lighthouse was built in 1873 during Japan's modernization period and stands as one of the earliest navigation aids constructed along the eastern coast. This structure represents a key part of Japan's historical effort to develop maritime infrastructure during that transformative era.

Stone statues of characters created by manga artist Tetsuya Chiba, who spent his working years in the former town of Iioka, stand on the lighthouse grounds. These figures link the location to the artistic heritage that shaped the local identity.

Visitors can reach the location by taking a community bus from Asahi Station to Iioka Todai stop, which is just a short walk away. The grounds are accessible with clear pathways leading to the tower and surrounding areas.

The lighthouse features pillars that play the song 'Forever Friends' when touched, stemming from the location's appearance in a Japanese film. This interactive element adds a contemporary pop culture dimension to the site that surprises most visitors.
