Southern Yatsugatake Volcanic Group, Volcanic group in Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
The Southern Yatsugatake Volcanic Group stretches across Nagano and Yamanashi Prefectures and consists of several connected peaks made of basalt and andesite. Mount Aka forms the highest point at 2,899 meters in this volcanic chain in central Japan.
The volcanic formations developed between one million and 200,000 years ago through repeated eruptions. This activity left a network of stratovolcanoes that shapes the mountain landscape today.
The range belongs to the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, a list that has guided mountaineers for generations. Hikers today follow the same trails shaped by decades of regular use.
Several hiking trails connect the main peaks and start from Natsuzawa Pass with routes toward Sakuradaira and the Honzawa hot springs. Most trails require good physical condition and proper gear for changing weather at higher elevations.
The basalt composition creates conditions for alpine plant species that are uncommon at this elevation. These ecosystems lie within the boundaries of a quasi-national park that protects the variety of flora.
