Kimotsuki district, Administrative district in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan.
Kimotsuki is an administrative district in Kagoshima Prefecture comprising four municipalities: Higashikushira, Kinkō, Minamiōsumi, and Kimotsuki town. The area spans several hundred square kilometers and combines different coastal and mountainous landscapes across its territory.
The district was established in February 1879 and underwent several boundary changes over the following decades. Its modern structure took shape in 2005 when territorial adjustments consolidated the area into the four municipalities seen today.
The district preserves archaeological remains from the Kofun period that visitors can observe at several sites throughout the area. The Tsukazaki Kofun Cluster stands out as a nationally designated historic site that draws those interested in exploring this early chapter of Japanese history.
The area is well-connected by national highways, particularly Route 220 and Route 448 which link the municipalities together. The nearest train station is Kagoshima-Chūō, making it a logical starting point for planning your arrival.
Within the district lies the Uchinoura Space Center, operated by JAXA for space research and satellite launches. This facility brings advanced scientific work to a region otherwise known for its natural geography and historical sites.
