Japan Institute of the Moving Image, Film education institution in Kawasaki, Japan
The Japan Institute of the Moving Image is a film school in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture. The facility offers studios, projection spaces and postproduction equipment for future directors, cinematographers and screenwriters.
Director Shohei Imamura founded the school in 1975 as successor to the Yokohama Broadcasting Technical School. The institution quickly developed into a training center for narrative filmmaking and documentary production.
The institute maintains partnerships with international film schools through CILECT membership, facilitating knowledge exchange and collaborative projects across borders.
The institute sits in a commercial district east of Kawasaki city center. Most teaching spaces occupy a multistory building with glazed facades and a marked entrance.
Takashi Miike worked as assistant director on Imamura's 1987 film Zegen while studying here. This early collaboration shaped his later career as a prolific and experimental filmmaker.
