Tokyo Mosque, Mosque in Shibuya, Japan

Tokyo Mosque is an Islamic place of worship in Shibuya ward in the Japanese capital, displaying elements of Ottoman building craft. The dome rises from the center of the structure and the slender minaret marks the highest point of the complex.

Immigrants from Turkey built the first building in the late 1930s and replaced it about sixty years later with a new construction. An architect from Turkey designed the current structure, which arose in the late 1990s.

The name comes from the Turkish word for mosque, and the interior displays calligraphy and ceramic work rooted in Ottoman tradition. Visitors see an example of Turkish architecture in the Japanese capital, serving as a place for religious observance and gatherings.

The entrance sits on a side street and signs point the way from the main road. Visitors should wear modest clothing and remove shoes before entering the prayer spaces.

Craftsmen from Turkey traveled to Japan to complete the building with traditional materials and techniques. Marble for the floors and walls arrived by ship from quarries in Anatolia.
