Komaba Park, Urban park in Meguro-ku, Japan
Komaba Park is an urban park housing a Western mansion with Greek marble columns, wooden wall panels, chandeliers, and stained glass windows. Multiple gardens spread across the grounds, offering different spaces to explore.
The property was originally the private estate of Marquis Maeda Toshinari, a descendant of the Kaga Clan Samurai family, before opening to the public in 1967. This transformation reflects how aristocratic holdings shifted to public spaces in the modern era.
The grounds blend Western and Japanese building styles side by side, with the traditional residence featuring tatami floors that overlook a garden with a waterfall and pond.
The park sits between Komaba campus facilities of the University of Tokyo and requires entry through narrow passages. Morning visits work best when the site is quieter and lighting shows the architecture to better effect.
The open lawn once hosted equestrian activities and served as a winter skiing slope for the Maeda family. Today a circle of cherry trees occupies this space, creating a special natural display during the blooming season.
