Komabano Park, Urban park in Meguro-ku, Tokyo, Japan
Komabano Park is a public green space in the Komaba neighborhood of Meguro-ku, Tokyo, with open lawn areas, walking paths, a Japanese garden with a pond, and playgrounds. The park sits alongside the Komaba campus of the University of Tokyo and can be entered from several side streets nearby.
The land once belonged to Marquis Maeda Toshinari, a descendant of the Kaga Clan, before it was opened to the public as a park in 1986. Before that, the grounds were a private estate closed to outsiders.
The Museum of Modern Japanese Literature stands inside the park and holds manuscripts, letters, and first editions from 20th-century Japanese writers. The building and the surrounding garden create a setting where literature and outdoor space feel naturally connected.
The park has several entrances and is easy to walk through, as the ground is flat and the paths are straightforward to follow. It draws visitors at different times of day, from morning joggers to families in the afternoon.
After World War II, a mansion on the grounds served as the home of General Ennis Whitehead, commander of the 5th Air Force, until 1957. That building still stands in the park today, making it one of the few visible traces of the postwar period on this site.
