Kamioka, dissolved municipality in Yoshiki district, Gifu prefecture, Japan
Kamioka is a former municipality in the Yoshiki district of Gifu Prefecture, set among the mountains of the Japan Alps. It merged with the city of Hida in the early 2000s and is now part of that city rather than an independent administrative unit.
Kamioka grew through the 20th century as a mining town, with zinc extraction driving its development and drawing workers to the area. It held the status of an independent municipality for decades before joining Hida in 2005.
The mining past of this former town left a visible mark on its streets and buildings, many of which date back to the years when the mines were active. Local museums and community spaces keep that memory alive for residents and visitors alike.
Getting to Kamioka is easiest by car, as the area sits deep in a mountain valley with limited public transport connections. Those who explore on foot should wear sturdy shoes, since the terrain around the old town is hilly and the paths can be uneven.
Deep beneath the mountains near the old town, the Kamioka Observatory is one of the world's leading sites for neutrino research. The discoveries made there have been recognized with a Nobel Prize in Physics, which is a rare distinction for a facility located in a small mountain town.
