Uraga Dock Company, Japanese shipyard
Uraga Dock Company is a shipyard in Yokosuka, a port city south of Tokyo, where large vessels are built and repaired. The site sits directly on the bay and consists of multiple dry docks, production halls, and workshops spread across a large waterfront area.
The shipyard was founded during the Meiji era, a period when Japan was actively building up its maritime and industrial capacity. It grew into one of the country's oldest operating yards and was closely tied to the expansion of Japanese naval production.
Yokosuka has long been shaped by its connection to the sea, and the Uraga Dock Company is a visible part of that story along the waterfront. The cranes and dry docks rising above the bay are a familiar sight for locals and a striking feature for anyone passing through the harbor area.
The site is an active industrial facility, so direct access to the grounds is restricted and not open to casual visitors. Walking along the Yokosuka waterfront gives a clear view of the cranes and dry docks from outside the perimeter.
The Uraga area was one of the first places in Japan where Western ships were officially received in the 19th century, before the country opened its borders. This location put the site at an early crossroads between Japanese and Western shipbuilding methods.
