Wat Banan, Buddhist temple and archaeological site near Sangkaè River, Cambodia
Wat Banan is an ancient temple with five stone towers set on a mountain summit in Battambang Province. The site includes multiple structures arranged across the hilltop and connected by stepped pathways.
King Udayadityavarman II built this temple in the 11th century as a place for military prayers. Later religious transformations modified some of its elements.
The complex holds Buddhist statues within its towers, some modified during religious changes in the 12th century.
Reaching the summit requires climbing around 368 steps flanked by stone lions and serpent statues. Bring sturdy footwear and water, especially in hot weather.
Two rectangular water basins mark where the path to the mountain temple begins, once serving specific purposes. Frangipani trees grow at the summit, adding a delicate touch to the setting.
