Plain of Reeds, Wetland region in Mekong Delta, Vietnam and Cambodia.
The Plain of Reeds is a vast wetland depression in the Mekong Delta spanning Vietnam and Cambodia, characterized by shallow waters and dense reed growth. Seasonal flooding changes the landscape dramatically, submerging large areas beneath water from May through October.
The region became a strategic military zone during the Vietnam War, hosting major operations by several nations. Afterwards, efforts to restore and protect the wetland ecosystem have shaped its recovery.
People here live in stilt houses and use traditional wooden boats for fishing, a way of life shaped by the annual flooding. This connection between water and daily routines is visible everywhere you walk or travel by boat.
Visit between November and April when water levels drop and the landscape is easier to navigate and observe. Guided boat tours are the main way to explore, as most of the area can only be reached by water.
The region is known for floating rice paddies that rise and fall with the changing water levels instead of staying fixed in place. Local farmers developed this ingenious technique generations ago to work with the harsh conditions rather than against them.
