Tram Chim National Park, National park and Ramsar site in Dong Thap province, Vietnam.
Tram Chim is a national park and Ramsar site in Dong Thap province within the Mekong Delta, covering large wetland areas. The landscape alternates between shallow water plains, lotus patches, and grass meadows laced with narrow channels.
The area received protection in 1985 to preserve the wetlands of Dong Thap Muoi. National park designation followed in 1998 after efforts to restore rare bird populations proved successful.
Communities living nearby travel the waterways in narrow boats and gather water lilies for cooking. Fishermen cast their nets in the early morning and sell their catch at floating markets nearby.
Boat tours lead through the waterways and allow close observation of birds and plants. The best months for visiting fall between December and May when migratory birds inhabit the wetlands.
More than two hundred thirty bird species use the area as a stopover or habitat, including several crane species. Thirty-two of these species are considered internationally threatened or endangered.
