Namiseom is a river island in the middle of the Han River near Chuncheon, featuring tree-lined pathways and various woodland areas. The place offers walking routes, rest areas, and spaces to explore at a relaxed pace.
The island formed after the Cheongpyeong Dam was built in 1944, when the river's water level rose and created this landform. Its name comes from General Nami, a military leader from the Joseon era.
The island gained international attention after the television drama Winter Sonata filmed here in 2002, which drew many visitors especially from Japan. This event shaped how people experience and visit the place today.
Visitors reach the island by ferry from Gapyeong wharf or can try a zip line crossing over the river. Wearing comfortable shoes is helpful since you will spend time walking the paths and exploring different areas.
The island operates as the self-declared Naminara Republic, complete with its own passport stamps and currency that visitors receive. This playful concept adds an entertaining touch to the visit.
