The museum stands on the former site of army headquarters and opened in 1994 to document Korean military history, particularly focusing on the 1950-1953 Korean War.
Black marble monuments throughout the museum display the names of military personnel and police officers who died during the Korean War and subsequent conflicts.
The museum welcomes visitors from Tuesday through Sunday between 9:00 and 18:00, with free guided tours available at 10:00 and 14:00 daily.
The Statue of Brothers in the memorial plaza depicts a South Korean soldier embracing a North Korean soldier, representing the divided Korean peninsula.
