Uhangri Formation, Geological formation in Haenam, South Korea.
Uhangri Formation is a geological site in Haenam where layers of sedimentary rock are exposed along the cliffs overlooking Lake Damsuho. The rock faces reveal fossils of dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and early birds trapped within the stone layers.
This formation comes from the Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous period, when this area was submerged beneath an ancient sea. The sedimentary layers preserved a snapshot of life from approximately 80 million years ago.
Scientists and researchers from multiple universities study the fossilized footprints to understand the behavior patterns of prehistoric creatures in this region.
The site is accessible from multiple viewpoints along the lakeshore, allowing clear viewing of the different rock layers from ground level. Wearing comfortable shoes is recommended since paths along the shore can be uneven and require careful footing.
The rock layers contain the largest pterosaur footprints ever discovered, with each impression measuring several centimeters across. These fossilized tracks offer a rare glimpse into how these flying reptiles moved and behaved.
