Lake Marqaköl, Alpine lake in East Kazakhstan Region, Kazakhstan
Lake Marqaköl extends across the valley at 1,447 meters elevation, surrounded by the Kurchumsky and Azutau mountain ranges in Kazakhstan.
Scientific exploration of Lake Marqaköl began in 1863 when researchers K.V. Struve and G.N. Potanin conducted initial studies following Russian Empire annexation.
The name Marqaköl originates from Turkic language elements, where 'köl' means lake and 'marqa' refers to a type of fish found in its waters.
The lake freezes during winter months when temperatures drop to -55 degrees Celsius, except for the area where the Kalzhyr River flows.
The protected area contains 700 plant species and provides habitat for snow leopards, brown bears, wolverines, and 258 bird species.
