Мавзолей Абдель Азізбаба, Medieval mausoleum in Turkistan Region, Kazakhstan.
Mausoleum Abdel Aziz Baba is a 19th-century portal-domed structure of fired brick measuring 14 by 6.9 meters and 11 meters high, with three square rooms in a row linked by wide openings. The central room has a monumental peshtak and a conical dome on a high cylindrical drum over an octagon; the side rooms, of different heights, are also domed. The northern room holds Abdel Azizbaba's tombstone, opposite it the grave of Seyid Khojahan-ata.
The present building dates from the late 1860s, replacing an earlier structure erected under the Sheybanid Nauroz Ahmad Khan (Barak Khan), who ruled in Tashkent and Samarkand in 1550-1556. A first tomb may have stood from the Karakhanid period, between the 10th and 12th centuries. Study began in the 1920s with expeditions by P. P. Ivanov and M. E. Masson; in 1947 architects of the South Kazakhstan expedition examined it, and in 1982 it was listed as a monument of republican significance.
The mausoleum is a pilgrimage site for local Muslims, and the name Abdel-Azizbaba is followed by the title bab, meaning a righteous person who spread Islam. The wooden entrance doors carry a carved ornament in shallow relief, and the walls once bore inscriptions with Quranic suras and the names of masters Muhammad Kasym Margilani, Molla Jalil Margilani and Khoja Huseyn.
The mausoleum stands in the northern part of Sayram, in Shymkent's Karatau district, not in Turkistan. The building measures 14 by 6.9 m and is 11 m high, with three rooms in a row; the tomb of Abdel-Azizbaba is in the northern room, and the burial of Seyid Khodzhakhan-ata faces it. A stairway on the north facade, beside the portal, leads up at the 0.820 mark.
The interior walls once carried epigraphic paintings with Quranic suras and the names of masters Muhammad Kasym Margilani, Molla Jalil Margilani and Khoja Huseyn. Writer D. Doszhanov, visiting Sayram in the 1960s, described two horses painted under the dome, one gripped by a wild beast.
