Alakol, Biosphere reserve and Ramsar wetland in Zhetisu Region, Kazakhstan
Alakol is a protected reserve in Zhetisu Region comprising interconnected lakes, marshes, and river deltas spread across thousands of square kilometers. The area forms an oasis within the steppe desert landscape with multiple habitats supporting diverse wildlife.
The area received recognition as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2013 and became internationally designated as a protected natural territory. This designation incorporated it into a global network of reserves with scientific research and conservation programs.
Local populations of 33,000 residents maintain traditional agricultural practices while participating in conservation efforts through regulated land use and environmental monitoring.
