Ashrafieh

Ashrafieh is a neighborhood in eastern Beirut located on elevated ground and characterized by narrow winding streets alongside modern office buildings and residential complexes. The district divides into nine sectors and contains numerous commercial centers with transportation connections throughout the area.

Greek Orthodox merchant families from Beirut's old city settled in the neighborhood during the mid-1800s and built numerous grand residences. This settlement marked the start of its growth into a prosperous area that continued expanding over subsequent generations.

The neighborhood developed as a hub for education and intellectual activity, where several respected schools and universities shape its character. These institutions have influenced daily life and continue to affect how people use the space and interact with one another.

The terrain is hilly and sometimes steep, so good footwear is important for safely walking through the narrow streets. The best time to explore is during morning hours when the streets are less crowded and you can move more easily through the different sectors.

Archaeological discoveries reveal human activity dating to ancient times, with a necropolis and water spring found near Saint Demetrios Church. These findings show the area was inhabited long before the wealthy settlements of the 1800s developed.
