Echelon Barracks, Military barracks in Fort district, Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Echelon Barracks was a military compound in downtown Colombo comprising three aligned buildings with wide verandahs arranged around a central parade ground. The open space functioned as a training area and gathering place for the stationed garrison.
The barracks were established in 1883 to serve as the main headquarters for British Army operations during the colonial period in Ceylon. When independence arrived in 1948, the site became symbolic of the transfer of military authority to the newly formed Sri Lankan state.
The site represented British military dominance in Colombo and marked a turning point when control of defense forces passed to Sri Lankan hands after independence. People watched as the compound gradually transformed from a foreign garrison into a symbol of the newly independent nation's authority.
The former military site has been redeveloped and now contains modern office buildings and hotels in central Colombo. Visitors can easily access the area as it sits in a well-connected downtown location with nearby shops and services.
The central parade ground doubled as a sports field during World War II, where British servicemen played football and hockey to unwind. This mixed use revealed how military life balanced between duty and recreation during wartime.
