Kukule Ganga Dam, Gravity dam in Kalawana, Sri Lanka.
The Kukule Ganga Dam is a gravity dam on the Kukule Ganga River in Ratnapura District, Sri Lanka, rising about 110 meters and forming a large reservoir. The power station is built underground, carved directly into the rock at the base of the structure.
Construction began in 1999 and the facility came into operation in 2005, at a time when Sri Lanka urgently needed to expand its power supply. The project was financed with international support as part of a broader plan to use the country's river resources.
The dam sits in a remote part of the Sabaragamuwa Province, where nearby villages experienced a shift in the local landscape when the reservoir filled. The water stored here also supports irrigation for rice paddies downstream.
The site is in a hilly, forested area where roads can become difficult after heavy rain, so visiting in the dry season is a good idea. Access to the dam itself may be restricted, so checking ahead before making the trip is worth the effort.
Although the facility generates power for a large part of the country, the entire machine hall is hidden inside the mountain and invisible from the outside. Visitors passing through the area rarely realize that turbines are running directly beneath their feet.
