Port City Colombo, Special economic zone on reclaimed land in Colombo, Sri Lanka
Port City Colombo is a special economic zone built on reclaimed land along the Colombo shoreline, spanning approximately 269 hectares. The territory was created by adding new ground to the existing coastline of the city.
The project started in 2014 through a partnership between Sri Lanka and a Chinese port construction company. This development fundamentally altered the shape of the city's coastline.
The site is organized into several districts including Financial, Marina, and International Island areas that together form a modern urban community. These different neighborhoods were designed to combine various functions and lifestyles in one location.
The area is connected by canals that link different sections and allow water transportation routes. Visitors can explore the various districts on foot or by water.
The development allows financial transactions in 16 different currencies, independent of domestic market conditions. This makes it a self-contained financial space within the city.
