Martello Tower, Coastal defense fort in Hambantota, Sri Lanka
Martello Tower is a circular coastal fort in Hambantota with thick stone walls. The structure contained a storage area on the lower level and sleeping quarters above for the soldiers stationed there.
The fort was built between 1804 and 1806 to protect the harbor after an attack by local forces. This defense structure became part of the broader British coastal protection strategy in Sri Lanka.
The structure reflects British colonial military design of its era. Its circular form and thick walls represent a building style that became standard for coastal defense across the empire.
The tower is reached by climbing external stairs that lead to the upper levels. Today it houses a small museum about local fishing, offering visitors a look at maritime traditions of the area.
The structure features an unusual projecting rim around its top wall that sets it apart from typical examples. This distinctive detail was uncommon among similar defense towers built across the region.
