Mirijjawila Botanical Garden, Botanical garden in Hambantota, Sri Lanka.
Mirijjawila Botanical Garden is a large garden in Hambantota's southern region, specialized in plants adapted to dry conditions. Three water tanks distribute irrigation throughout the grounds, and numerous plant species thrive across different zones within the garden.
The garden was established in 2013 by the Department of National Botanic Gardens on land previously covered with thorny shrubs and abandoned farmland. An organized botanical space emerged from what had been neglected terrain.
The garden grows medicinal herbs used in traditional Sri Lankan medicine and supports research on plant applications. You can see how these healing plants are cultivated and maintained on the grounds.
The garden is accessible through two entrances: one from Colombo-Kataragama Road and another from Beragama Road, with different entry fees for locals and visitors. Plan time to walk through the different zones, as the grounds are quite extensive.
The garden houses plant species found only in Sri Lanka's dry zone, making it one of few places where these rare plants can be seen together. This concentration of local species offers insight into vegetation that most visitors would not encounter elsewhere.
