Yatala Vehera, Ancient Buddhist temple in Deberawewa - Thissamaharama, Sri Lanka.
The stupa stands on a foundation of flat granite stones, featuring a perimeter wall decorated with carved elephant heads and a substantial moat.
The Yatala Vehera, constructed approximately 2300 years ago during the 3rd century BC, marks the first stupa established in the kingdom of Ruhuna.
The temple holds religious significance as it was presented to Arhant Arittha Thero, recognized as the first Sinhalese arhant, by the regional ruler.
The temple structure includes an opening that enables visitors to examine different construction phases from various historical periods of restoration.
Multiple relic caskets have been discovered within the structure, though the specific items originally enshrined remain undetermined to this day.
