Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuanian university (1950-)
Kaunas University of Technology is a public university in Kaunas, Lithuania, focused on engineering, natural sciences, and social sciences. The campus spreads across several buildings in the city center and includes laboratories, libraries, and student dormitories on site.
The university was founded in 1922, shortly after Lithuania declared independence, to train engineers and scientists for the young country. After the Soviet period, it was reorganized in 1990 and took its current name.
The university sits on Kaunas Technopolis, a science park where students work alongside companies on real projects. Visitors walking through the area can see laboratories and startup spaces mixed together with teaching buildings.
The university is centrally located in Kaunas and easy to reach on foot or by public transport from most parts of the city. Many courses are taught in English, which makes it accessible for international students and visitors.
The university runs its own open-access publishing house, making research papers freely available online to anyone in the world. This is still uncommon among technical universities in the Baltic region.
