Bekes Hill

Bekes Hill, Summit and hillfort in Senamiestis, Lithuania

Bekes Hill sits between the Neris and Vilnia rivers and rises as a natural formation within Kalnai Park near Gediminas Tower in Vilnius. The slopes are covered in vegetation, and the summit provides views across the surrounding river valley.

The hill takes its name from Gaspar Bekes, a Hungarian military commander who served under Stephen Bathory of Poland during the 16th century. The site functioned as a fortified position controlling strategic river crossings in the region.

The location holds significance as a burial ground, marked by an octagonal tower measuring 20 meters in height and 6 meters in diameter.

The hill is accessible by walking trails through the park and can be reached on foot from multiple entrances. The easiest approach is from the Gediminas Tower side, where parking is available.

A commemorative marker or planned memorial honors the historical connection to Gaspar Bekes and his role in East European history. The site thus connects local landscape history with international remembrance practices.
