Larochette Castle, Medieval castle on sandstone promontory in Larochette, Luxembourg
Larochette Castle is a fortress built on a sandstone outcrop that rises high above the Ernz river valley, featuring multiple manor buildings and fortification structures. The buildings are spread across the rocky platform and form an interconnected layout with residential quarters, defensive walls, and tower structures from different periods.
The complex was founded in the 11th century and served as a residence for several noble families until a major fire in 1565 partially destroyed it. After this devastating event, the fortress fell into disrepair but was later partially restored and has since remained a record of medieval military and residential construction.
The name reflects the shared nature of the settlement, where multiple noble families maintained separate households within one fortified complex. Walking through the structures, you can see how each family had their own manor spaces while sharing common defensive areas.
The site sits on a distinctive rocky outcrop and can be viewed from multiple vantage points in the surrounding area. Visitors should expect steep pathways on the grounds and wear appropriate footwear for navigating the uneven terrain.
The complex was a Ganerbenburg, where multiple noble families lived at the same time and specific peace agreements called Burgfrieden governed their coexistence. This peaceful sharing of one fortress by several owners was unusual in the medieval period and made this place a rare example of joint lordship.
