Perast, Coastal settlement in Kotor Municipality, Montenegro
Perast is a coastal town in the Bay of Kotor that stretches along the water with stone houses and churches displaying Venetian architectural features. The settlement sits between the bay and forested hillsides, with two distinctive islets lying just offshore.
The town grew into a significant maritime hub during Venetian rule in the 16th and 17th centuries, supported by shipyards and defensive structures. After Venice's decline, the settlement became a smaller trading post and eventually part of the broader Montenegrin coast.
The two islets facing the town define its character: Saint George holds a Benedictine monastery, while Our Lady of the Rocks stands on artificially built ground. Both islands are woven into local life and regularly visited by travelers.
The best time to explore is early morning or late afternoon when fewer visitors are around. The town is easy to walk through, with a waterfront path connecting its main points, and boat trips to the two islands depart from here.
The local maritime museum displays a remarkable collection of ship models, sea charts, and personal belongings of captains from several centuries. These objects tell stories of local sailors whose families sailed the oceans for generations.
