Pirlitor, Medieval fort at Mount Durmitor, Montenegro.
Pirlitor is a medieval fort standing at about 1450 meters in elevation, positioned at the edge of the Tara River canyon near Žabljak. Visitors can observe the remaining wall section at the highest point and traces of a dry moat that still mark the site today.
The fortress arose in medieval times to control the trading route connecting Nikšić and Pljevlja, which descended from Durmitor's Lake Plateau into the canyon below. This strategic position made it a key checkpoint for traffic moving through the region.
The fort appears in Serbian epic poetry, where it connects to Voivode Momčilo, a legendary character from regional folklore traditions. These stories remain part of how locals understand and relate to this place.
The site is best reached on foot and requires some physical effort to reach. The location offers little shelter from the weather, so visitors should bring appropriate clothing depending on the season.
The site offers views of the Tara, one of Europe's deepest river gorges, where water constantly carries stones and wood. This river landscape created the natural barrier that gave the fortress extra protection.
