Bago Region, Administrative region in southern central Myanmar.
Bago Region is an administrative area in south-central Myanmar that stretches between Magway Region to the north and Yangon to the south. The region consists of several administrative districts with towns, agricultural land, and scattered settlements connected by roads.
The area was part of the Hanthawaddy Kingdom from 1369 to 1539, serving as a major port for European merchants and traders. King Bayinnaung's rule in the 1500s brought significant wealth and power to the region during that era.
Buddhist temples and monasteries are scattered throughout the region, where over 90 percent of the population follows this faith alongside traditional crafts. Walking through towns, you will notice skilled artisans practicing lacquerware and weaving in small workshops passed down through families.
You can reach the region from Yangon by regular bus services that run multiple times daily between major towns. Accommodations range from basic guesthouses to mid-range hotels available in larger towns throughout the area.
The Kanbawzathadi Palace reconstruction displays detailed wooden architecture from the 1500s, built using traditional craftsmanship methods. Visitors can see how artisans carefully replicated decorative carvings and structural designs from historical records and old accounts.
