Rakhine State, State in western Myanmar
The Arakan Mountains form a natural barrier between Rakhine State and central Myanmar, stretching along the coast of the Bay of Bengal for 36,762 square kilometers.
After the First Anglo-Burmese War in 1826, the British East India Company incorporated Rakhine into British India, dividing it into three administrative districts.
Multiple ethnic communities inhabit Rakhine State, including Rakhine Buddhists, Rohingya Muslims, Chin, Mro, and Kaman groups, each maintaining distinct traditions and practices.
Transportation within Rakhine State relies primarily on air travel between major cities, as road infrastructure across the Arakan Mountains remains limited.
