Erdenet is an industrial city in Orkhon Province situated in a valley between the Selenge and Orkhon rivers. The city grew around major copper mining operations that began extraction in the 1970s and remains a key center for mineral production in Mongolia.
The city was founded in 1974 following the discovery of large copper deposits in the 1950s. This discovery sparked rapid industrialization and fast population growth in the region.
The Mining Museum within the Culture Palace exhibits local industrial heritage while the Aimag Museum, founded in 1983, presents regional historical artifacts.
The city sits roughly 240 kilometers northwest of Ulaanbaatar and connects to major towns through regular bus services on paved roads. Visitors can reach it from Ulaanbaatar, Darkhan, and neighboring areas without difficulty.
The Erdenet Mining Corporation manages the fourth largest copper mine worldwide, employing 8000 workers and contributing 13.5 percent to Mongolia's GDP.
