Blue Lagoon, Natural lagoon on Comino Island, Malta
The Blue Lagoon is a sheltered bay between limestone cliffs on Comino Island, recognizable by its exceptionally clear shallow waters. The water displays varying shades of blue and is bordered by small pebble beaches and rocky shores.
Comino Island served as a defensive position for the Knights of Malta during the 16th century, monitoring trade routes across the Mediterranean. The bay later became a favored anchorage for fishing boats and merchant vessels.
Local fishermen maintain traditional fishing practices in the surrounding waters, contributing to the preservation of Malta's maritime traditions.
Visitors can reach the lagoon by boat from Malta or Gozo, with footpaths connecting it to other parts of the island. Early morning or late afternoon offers the calmest conditions and fewer crowds for a more comfortable experience.
The water is constantly renewed through underground caves beneath the rocks, creating fresh currents that maintain clarity. This natural circulation keeps the lagoon clean despite the number of swimmers visiting throughout the day.
