Ithaa, Underwater restaurant at Conrad Rangali Island, Maldives
This dining venue sits encased in transparent acrylic panels that allow unobstructed observation of surrounding coral formations and passing marine species throughout the meal. The curved walls and ceiling form a complete underwater viewing chamber.
Construction finished in April 2005 after designers from New Zealand collaborated with Maldivian operators to create the first restaurant of its kind. The structure required specialized engineering to withstand ocean pressure at 16 feet (5 meters) depth.
The name Ithaa comes from the Dhivehi language of Maldives and translates to mother of pearl, connecting the establishment to local maritime traditions and the islands' historical relationship with the ocean.
Seating capacity is limited to fourteen people per session with mandatory prior booking through the resort. A smart casual dress code applies for lunch while evening service requires more formal attire. Transportation between resort buildings operates via boat.
The restaurant was originally planned as a temporary structure with a projected lifespan of about twenty years, but ongoing maintenance and engineering updates have extended its operation beyond initial expectations for underwater construction.
