Ténéré desert

The Ténéré is a vast sand desert in northeastern Niger located between the Aïr Mountains and the Tibesti Mountains. The landscape consists of rolling dunes alternating with flat gravel plains.

Archaeological evidence reveals that this region transformed from an ancient seafloor to tropical forest over thousands of years. Climate changes gradually converted it into the desert landscape visible today.

The name comes from the Tuareg language, reflecting the presence of these nomadic people who used sand dunes as natural navigation markers. They developed practical knowledge of how to move through this landscape.

Water sources are scarce and scattered across vast distances, requiring careful preparation for travel. Local guides can help navigate the terrain and locate essential resources.

The remains of an ancient acacia tree, half-buried in sand, stand as a reminder of wetter times. This solitary skeletal tree became a landmark that Tuareg travelers traditionally used to orient themselves.
