Gashaka Gumti National Park, National park in eastern Taraba and Adamawa, Nigeria
Gashaka Gumti National Park spreads across eastern Taraba and Adamawa and is shaped by two contrasting landscapes: flat savannah grasslands in the north and steep mountainous terrain with deep valleys in the south. The diverse topography creates different habitats where visitors can observe wildlife, plants, and geological features throughout the park.
The park emerged in the 1960s from efforts to control excessive hunting and safeguard the Taraba River watersheds. This creation reflects an early commitment to protecting natural resources in the region.
Local communities and traditional leaders play an active role in managing the park's resources and safeguarding its lands. This partnership shapes how people today connect with the natural world around them and make decisions about their environment.
Visitors can explore the park's main attractions including a hippo pool, the ruins of an old German fortress, and a museum displaying wildlife specimens and information. Plan visits during daylight hours and prepare for variable weather conditions, particularly during the rainy season.
Within the park's southern region stands Chappal Waddi, rising to about 2,400 meters and marking Nigeria's highest mountain peak. This prominent summit is visible from many parts of the park and shapes the dramatic landscape visitors encounter.
