Volcán Casita

Volcán Casita is a stratovolcano in Chinandega Department, part of the San Cristobal volcanic complex, rising to about 1,405 meters. Small fumaroles emerge from its crater, and the slopes support coffee plantations while radio antennas occupy the summit.

The volcano gained tragic prominence during Hurricane Mitch in October 1998, which triggered catastrophic mudslides. This disaster killed over 2,000 people in nearby rural areas, making it one of the region's deadliest natural events.

The name Casita reflects indigenous knowledge about water filtration, rooted in local understanding of the landscape. Slopes have long served as cultivated land for nearby communities, showing how people have integrated this terrain into their daily lives.

Reaching the volcano requires a high-clearance vehicle starting from kilometer 155 on the Leon-Chinandega highway. Access becomes more challenging during rainy seasons, so visitors should check conditions beforehand.

The summit is occupied by radio communication antennas, making the mountain an important technical hub. This modern use connects an ancient natural feature with contemporary communication technology.
