Leusden

Leusden is a municipality in Utrecht province comprising four villages across varied terrain. The western section sits on the Utrecht Hill Ridge with forests and heathland, while the eastern portion is dominated by farmland and open fields.

The area was first documented in 777 as Villa Lisiduna. The modern municipality formed in the early 1970s when the settlements of Leusbroek and Hamersveld merged into a single administrative entity.

The name Leusden originates from medieval times, referring to the ridge landscape. Local shopping areas and weekly markets in the village centers form the backbone of community life, where neighbors gather and exchange goods.

The four villages are Leusden, Leusden-Zuid, Achterveld, and Stoutenburg, each offering different starting points for exploration. The location just a short distance southeast of Amersfoort makes travel from the nearby city straightforward and convenient.

In 1924, the first Pinksterlanddagen took place on municipal grounds, a gathering created for youth with anarchist viewpoints. This unusual event highlights how the area served as a venue for social movements and unconventional gatherings during that era.
