Cho La, Mountain pass at 5420 meters in Solukhumbu District, Nepal.
Cho La is a mountain pass at about 5420 meters in northeastern Nepal's Solukhumbu District. The crossing links Dzongla village to Thagnak village through a glacier-covered route that requires careful navigation and proper equipment.
The pass has served as a traditional route through the Khumbu region for generations of trekkers. It connects the Everest Base Camp area with the Gokyo Lakes region and remains a key crossing point between these mountain valleys.
Local guides from Sherpa communities lead trekkers through this section of the Khumbu region, sharing knowledge about mountain safety and navigation.
Trekkers need microspikes or crampons for the glacier sections and should be well acclimatized for the extreme altitude. Hiring a local guide is strongly recommended and permits for Sagarmatha National Park are required.
The pass stays covered in snow for about nine months each year and temperatures regularly drop below freezing even in summer. On clear days, trekkers can spot golden eagles and other rare mountain birds that inhabit this high altitude zone.
