Parañaque, Highly urbanized city in Metro Manila, Philippines
Parañaque is a highly urbanized city in Metro Manila, Philippines, extending over 4,770 hectares (11,790 acres) south of the capital with residential areas, commercial centers, and entertainment districts. The different sections connect through major roads that also link the Entertainment City near Manila Bay with older coastal communities and the airport zone.
The settlement began in 1572 as Palanyag, when early inhabitants conducted maritime trade with merchants from Malaysia, Indonesia, India, and China. Toward the late 1800s, construction of the Manila-Cavite railway line changed how the community connected and encouraged growth along the coastal road.
The church in Baclaran district draws thousands of worshippers each week and ranks among the most visited religious sites in Asia. On Wednesdays, the sidewalks around the building fill with vendors selling candles, rosaries, and devotional items as crowds arrive for novena services.
The Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange operates as the central transport hub, linking several types of public transit to different sections of Metro Manila. Roads can become heavily congested during rush hours, particularly on routes toward the coast and the airport area.
Entertainment City hosts large integrated resort complexes, including Solaire Resort and Okada Manila, which contribute to municipal economic development. The complexes sit on reclaimed land along Manila Bay and rose from shallow coastal water in less than a decade.
