Rehman Dheri, Archaeological site in Dera Ismail Khan, Pakistan.
Rehman Dheri is an archaeological site featuring a rectangular mound that spreads across roughly 22 hectares with a organized street network visible throughout. The mound rises about 4.5 meters above the surrounding fields and shows traces of ancient urban planning.
The settlement was active between 3300 and 1900 BCE and ranks among the earliest planned urban centers in South Asia. Its structured layout shows how skilled ancient people were at designing and organizing cities.
Excavations reveal seals and pottery with early notation marks that suggest trade with distant regions. These objects show how this ancient city maintained connections with peoples far beyond its immediate area.
The site sits near the Gomal River Plain, roughly 22 kilometers north of Dera Ismail Khan. The open terrain provides a clear view of the ancient structures as you walk through the area.
A massive wall made of dressed clay blocks encloses the entire residential area, except for a southern extension that lies outside the main city defenses. This fortification reveals how the builders prioritized security and planned defensive strategies.
