Islam Barrage

Islam Barrage is a water control structure spanning the Sutlej River, built with gates that manage the river's flow and direct it into distribution channels. The facility channels water across agricultural zones, serving fields that depend entirely on this regulated supply.

Construction began in the early 1920s and was finished after several years of work as part of a larger river development scheme. The barrage was built when engineers were focusing on harnessing the river's water for farming across the region.

The barrage sits at the heart of farming life in Southern Punjab, where it has become part of the rhythm of agricultural work for generations. Water flows from here to feed the fields that sustain thousands of farming families across the region.

The barrage is accessible by following the main agricultural roads that lead toward the Sutlej River in this area. There are no set visiting hours, but daytime visits work best since you can freely walk around the structure.

The structure must constantly balance between two opposite demands: protecting against seasonal floods when melting snow swells the river, while also storing water for dry seasons when the flow drops sharply. This dual role makes it a pivotal point for managing the river's mood throughout the year.
