Czarny Staw pod Rysami is a mountain lake nestled below Mount Rysy in the High Tatras, surrounded by towering rock walls. The water body sits in a glacial cirque with steep slopes on nearly all sides, creating a secluded alpine setting.
The lake formed during the last glacial period when ice movements carved out the distinctive cirque in the High Tatras. After the glaciers retreated thousands of years ago, the basin filled with water and became a fixture in mountaineering routes.
