Most fordoński w Bydgoszczy, Steel railway and road bridge in Fordon district, Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Most fordoński is a steel truss bridge spanning 1001 meters across the Vistula River and handling both vehicle and train traffic. It rises on fourteen spans, connecting Bydgoszcz with Torun as a major transportation corridor.
The bridge was commissioned by the German Empire in 1891 as a strategic link between Germany and East Prussia, finishing in November 1893. This structure solved a key transportation need for the region at that time.
The bridge received its name in 2008 after Rudolf Modrzejewski, an engineer who constructed 50 bridges throughout North America.
The bridge allows daily passage for cars, trucks, and trains and is accessible from both banks. Pedestrians can also cross it, though the focus is on through traffic on this key route.
When it opened, it was the longest bridge in the German Empire and the first to use molten steel construction methods. This innovative approach made it a notable example of early steel bridge engineering in Europe.
