Oliwa

Oliwa is a district in Gdańsk built around its Metropolitan Cathedral, surrounded by green spaces and historic buildings. The area also houses one of the region's major zoological gardens and several monuments from earlier periods.

The area began as a Cistercian monastery village in the 12th century, with its name rooted in monastic religious symbolism. Over the centuries it developed into an important spiritual and cultural center for the region.

The Cathedral here draws music lovers from across Europe for its organ recitals, and visitors can see ornate altars inside with decorative details from centuries past.

The district is easily reached by tram and train connections, with multiple routes to reach the main attractions. Walking is the best way to explore the area, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

An old water forge from the 16th century still stands here with its original mechanisms visible, now used as a cultural event venue. This rare working example of industrial heritage draws curious visitors regularly.
