Lake Malta, Artificial reservoir and rowing venue in Poznań, Poland.
Lake Malta is a man-made reservoir in eastern Poznań formed by damming the Cybina River. The water surface stretches roughly 2000 meters long and about 175 meters wide, covering a total area of 64 hectares.
The water body was created in 1952 when the Cybina was dammed to provide a recreational area for the growing city. The naming honors the Knights of Malta who managed land in this vicinity back in the 12th century.
The reservoir takes its name from the Knights of Malta, who held lands in this area starting in 1187. Every June the shores transform into open stages where audiences gather by the water to watch performances during the annual theatre festival.
A loop trail of roughly 5.6 kilometers (3.5 miles) circles the entire shoreline and works well for walking or cycling. The northwest shore holds thermal baths, while the south shore offers beach sections and a ski slope that operate year-round.
Beneath the northwest shore lie thermal springs that supply water to the neighboring bathing complex. These natural warm sources were only discovered during lake construction in the 1950s.
