Fort IIIa w Poznaniu

Fort IIIa is a military fort built on sandy and wooded terrain in Miłostowo, spreading across about 98 hectares of land. Today the grounds contain over 81,000 graves and feature a modern crematorium built in 1993 plus Poland's first dedicated urn cemetery.

The fort was built as a military installation and served a significant role during World War II in regional defense. After the war, the grounds were transformed into a cemetery and now hold graves of Polish, Soviet, and German soldiers from various conflicts.

The site now functions as a cemetery where visitors encounter graves of many notable Polish artists, scientists, and cultural leaders who shaped the nation. Walking through these grounds connects you to people whose contributions remain significant today.

The grounds are open daily for visitors to walk through the wooded areas and explore the historic site's layout. The location is well maintained and reasonably accessible whether you use public transport or your own vehicle.

The grounds feature specific vegetation patterns of pine, birch, poplar, and alder trees planted in the 1940s to stabilize the soil. These intentionally arranged woodlands still shape the site's appearance today and show how nature was used to support military structures.
