Poznań Nowe Zoo, Zoological garden in eastern Poznań, Poland.
Poznań Nowe Zoo is a zoological garden in the eastern part of the city, set among wooded hills with several small lakes. Paths wind through varied terrain and pass spacious enclosures housing animals from different continents.
The garden was established in the early seventies of the twentieth century to replace the older city zoo. The first residents were mainly hoofed animals from Europe and South America, kept in naturalistic enclosures.
Local families often spend entire Sundays here, using the lawns near the enclosures for picnics. School groups regularly visit for guided tours and learn about the animals up close.
A visit usually takes several hours as paths lead through hilly terrain and a full tour requires some stamina. Comfortable shoes are recommended, especially in wet weather when trails can become slippery.
The grounds contain an old military structure from the nineteenth century that once formed part of the city defenses. Visitors can explore the thick brick walls and vaulted passages between animal enclosures.
